Icebreaker games online: 8 ideas to bring a chat to life

Updated October 6, 2026 · 5 min read

When the conversation slows down, a game does what a question sometimes cannot: it gives everyone something to do and something to laugh about. Here are eight ideas that work in a text chat, and four of them are built into Chat5.

Games built into Chat5

  • Guess Who: clues appear one by one and the first to find the character wins.
  • Draw and guess: one draws, the others guess, and the winner draws next.
  • Collaborative story: each player adds one sentence in turn.
  • Domino'color: align four cards of your colour before the others.

Any room member can ask the admin to start one, and the admin can pause the timers at any time.

Games to play in the chat

  • Two truths and a lie: each person says three things about themselves, and the others guess the lie.
  • Word chain: the next word must start with the last letter of the previous word.
  • Would you rather: one person asks, everybody answers and explains.
  • Emoji film: describe a film with emojis only, and the others guess.

How to propose a game without it being awkward

Keep it light: suggest it as an experiment ("want to try something?"), explain the rule in one sentence and play one round. If it does not work, drop it and move on. Nobody will remember a failed round, but everyone remembers a good one.
