Text chat or video chat: which one should you pick?

Updated October 6, 2026 · 4 min read

Both formats have fans, and both have good reasons to exist. The right one depends on what you want from the conversation. Here is a calm comparison, without taking sides against any service.

What video does well

  • Faces, voices and body language make it feel closer.
  • It is fast to understand someone's mood.
  • Great when you want to see a person, not only to talk.

What text does well

  • Privacy: you share what you want, nothing more.
  • Comfort: you can answer at your pace, at any time, in any place.
  • Equality: nobody is judged on appearance, age or accent.
  • Safety: no unwanted images or sounds.
  • Accessibility: works on slow connections and for people who are shy or deaf.

Which one for which situation?

  • You want to meet new people with low pressure: text.
  • You want to practise a foreign language: text first, then voice when you feel ready.
  • You want to see and hear someone you already know: video.
  • You are somewhere you cannot speak: text.

Why Chat5 chose text

Chat5 is text only on purpose. It is not a better format for everyone, it is a different one, for people who would like to speak freely without being on camera, and who do not want to be left alone with one person.

Questions

Is text chat less personal?

Not necessarily. Many people open up more easily in writing.

Can I switch to video later?

Chat5 does not offer video. If you want to see someone, you can agree to move elsewhere, but be careful about who you share details with.

Prefer words?

Join a room of 5 and talk without a camera.
